Kubernetes. Part 1: Installing Docker on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

All parts of the series “Kubernetes”

Unfortunately, at the time of writing (December 4, 2019), a Windows developer who wants to use Kubernetes can't get by without Linux. That's because a Kubernetes master node can only be installed on Linux.

First, we need to install Docker itself. Let's assume we have a freshly installed Ubuntu 18.04.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install \
    apt-transport-https \
    ca-certificates \
    curl \
    gnupg-agent \
    software-properties-common

curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg | sudo apt-key add -

sudo add-apt-repository "deb [arch=amd64] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu $(lsb_release -cs) stable"

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io

Let's check that everything went fine:

sudo docker run hello-world
